Turning pixels into atoms

That’s the creative tag line for Makie Lab, a UK-based startup that allows children to design their own custom dolls via the iPad, print them on a 3D printer, and have them delivered in the space of two weeks. It is a personalized service standout story.

Space

This service knows its audience. If there’s one thing my children love doing on the iPad, it’s dressing dolls. This is a disruptive take on a primal need in a back to the future way. Brilliant.

The price point is much higher than what I’d otherwise pay for a doll (about 100 pounds / $150) once you factor in the outfit and shipping. But we’re buying more than a doll; we’re buying an experience.

Consider how times have changed from the days of Cabbage Patch dolls and other crazes where we all sought an exact copy of the same item.

This is where we’re headed…highly personalized experiences that put the customer in the driver’s seat.
